Innovation versus Integration: Can Technology Really Change the Business of Building?

Thursday, October 15, 3:15 PM ET
    Phil Bernstein, AIA
Associate Dean, Yale School of Architecture
    Autodesk Fellow

After thirty years of tech innovation, A/E/C leaders might assume that revolutionary improvements in process and results are just around the corner. From CAD to BIM to the emerging machine learning age, there’s always been something “just ready” to transform the way we design and build. Despite “innovation” and “integration”, and new digital tools and provocative delivery models touted as keys to reaching a new nirvana, many promised benefits remain elusive. Leading AEC tech researcher and futurist Phil Bernstein, AIA, examines the structural challenges and new opportunities of using technology to refactor the value propositions at the heart of project delivery, and suggest strategies big and small that current practices should explore toward more productive and profitable ends.

    Innovation, Integration and Equity:
What's Missing When We Talk About Change in the Industry?

Friday, October 16, 11:15 AM ET
    Renée Cheng, FAIA, DPACSA
Dean of the College of Built Environments, University of Washington
Project Manager, AIA Guides to Equitable Practice

Resistance to change in the AEC industry has been blamed on many sources and there are an equal number of silver bullets proposed to overcome the inertia. We've seen some limited success: new technology accelerates processes, alternative delivery shows the potential for new value propositions and deepening levels of integration change the discussion. In spite of this, widespread positive change is missing. The premise of this talk is that culture change is required in order for the industry to truly benefit from these positive forces. Understanding collaboration as fundamentally an issue of equity and inclusion, AEC culture needs to value, appreciate and bridge across our disciplinary differences. This talk imagines a future where fluency in equitable practices fosters trust, respect, and psychological safety. In this future, innovation thrives.
