Biography

Frank A. Stasiowski is a counselor and advisor to CEO’s of many of the top design and construction firms in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, Switzerland, and Australia. He actively serves on the board of directors of major architectural and engineering firms throughout the world including one publicly traded 4000 person engineering firm. As an advisor to A/E/C firms worldwide, Frank helps his clients by challenging them to excel, and by assisting them to solve their problems and management issues. He sees his role as one of helping clients and client teams to generate alternative action options, explore the pro's, con's, risks and costs of those options, to provide recommendations but, ultimately, to allow clients to make their own decisions guided by his insight.

As a speaker internationally, Frank is best known as a Futurist predicting the direction of design and construction worldwide supported by his research data, and down to earth speaking style.

Frank’s Board work involves long term strategic issues where Frank often has the client firm form an internal executive task force to develop bold new strategies. Frank serves as the guide and coach to that group helping them agree on action steps and a work plan, suggesting various forms of information collection and analysis, contributing to the generation of creative ideas, challenging his client’s thinking and guiding the process through to a conclusion….all aimed to position a firm ahead of it’s competition into the next century.

Among the managerial topic areas he works on continually are strategy, marketing, leadership, merger/acquisition, capitalization and leadership and ownership transition. In addition to his counseling work, Frank spends significant time making presentations and facilitating meeting discussions, planning retreats, workshops and training sessions all to spread the word that PSMJ Resources, Inc. sole mission is to improve dramatically the business performance of architecture, engineering, environmental and construction firms worldwide.

As a licensed architect with degrees from the RI School of Design plus an MBA from Bryant University with honors, Frank brings a special understanding and sensitivity to the issues facing design firm executives shaped by over 30 years dedicated to helping design firms excel.

Biography

David Burstein is Director of Client Services for PSMJ Resources, Inc., the nation’s largest provider of management information to the engineering/architectural professions. As part of his responsibilities, he provides consulting and training services on the subjects of strategic planning, marketing, project management, human resources, quality, finance and ownership transition.

 

David has over 35 years experience in the management of engineering companies. As a senior principal for Parsons Corporation (one of the nation’s largest and most respected engineering firms), he has held a variety of responsible positions from 1972  through 1997 including President of Parsons’ 1600-person environmental subsidiary and President of Parsons 120-person planning subsidiary.

 

During his 26-year tenure with Parsons Corporation, David was heavily involved in strategic planning at both the subsidiary and corporate levels. He led numerous strategic planning teams to develop long-term strategies as well as annual business and training plans.

 

David has also served as a consultant for PSMJ Resources, Inc. (part time from 1979 until 1998 and full time since 1998). During this time, he has facilitated scores of strategic planning sessions for engineering, architectural, and planning firms. In 1997, he served as a principal collaborator for Strategic Planning: Preparing Your Firm for Success in the Future, PSMJ’s definitive guide to strategic planning. In 2005, he authored the 2nd edition to this best-selling book.

 

Since 1979, David has also written and lectured extensively on the subject of project management. He co-authored (with Frank Stasiowski) Project Management for the Design Professional (published in English and Spanish editions) and Total Quality Project Management. David also served as principal editor for “Chapter 1: Project Management” for McGraw-Hill’s Standard Handbook of Environmental Engineering. He has conducted over 100 seminars to over 3,000 engineers, architects and other design professionals.

 

David has BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University and has completed the Crosby Executive Quality College program. He has been a registered professional engineer since 1974 and is a Diplomate of Environmental Engineering.

Biography

Kate Allen is a consultant for PSMJ, primarily focusing on firm valuations. She also contributed to PSMJ's Mergers & Acquisitions and Owner Transition CEO Roundtables. She is responsible for advising and guiding owners and senior managers on the subjects of: financial management; ownership transition; leadership transition; firm valuation; merger/acquisition opportunities; operational strategies and strategic planning.

As a business executive, her experience ranges from business operations, business development, sales and marketing, and client/program/and project management. She has nearly 25 years of management experience, the last 15 of which have been in the A/E Industry.

Kate has bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Psychology from the University of Colorado, Denver and an MBA from the University of Denver. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Denver, teaching Leadership to undergraduates and MBA candidates; as well as Enterprise Solutions, a consulting related capstone course, to MBA candidates.

Biography

Alan Bollinger has worked with PSMJ for over 20 years and is considered a Project Management Bootcamp expert. With over 8 years of national and international training experience, Alan has trained over 5,000 project managers and taught the principles of successful project delivery and financial management. He is also responsible for editing the Project Management Newsletter and more recently helped compile the Project Management Manual.

Outside of PSMJ he is a highly experienced project manager with many years in the consulting and engineering field. His duties have included project identification, scope and fee development, project team selection, and leading the execution of agreed-upon work.

Alan attended Auburn University, where he received his B.S. in Civil Engineering and Masters in Environmental Engineering. Alan served as the Program Manager for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center CERCLA program with a solid record of success in meeting ever-changing and increasingly complex regulatory requirements. For his success, Alan received the Achievement Award from NASA’s Remedial Project Manager for “exemplary efforts demonstrated in the planning and preparation of Marshall Superfund related documents.”

Biography

Karen Compton leads PSMJ's A/E/C Marketing Bootcamp and Winning Proposals Presentations program and is also credited for being the author of PSMJ's book The Prospector: The Guide to Developing Clients.
 

Karen has over 14 years of experience in the architecture/engineering and construction (A/E/C) industry, and has served as Director of Business Development and Director of Marketing for small companies, mid-sized, multi-office firms and national and international corporations. Her focused approach to business development is based on a thorough understanding of the A/E/C environment and needs and expectations of the client. Her integrated approach of business management and business development has resulted in increased revenues of as much as 20% and the alignment of long- and short-term business goals and objectives for a variety of firms.

 

Ms. Compton holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount St. Mary’s College in Chemistry where she currently serves as a member of the Board of Regents; and an Advanced Management Certificate from the University Of Southern California. She is also an active civic and community leader and has held numerous prestigious positions.

Biography

 

With thirty-five years of design industry experience as a manager, consultant and writer, William Fanning has helped numerous firms throughout the country improve profitability and firm management as well as transition firm ownership. Bill is the Director of Research for the Professional Services Management Journal (PSMJ), the largest newsletter devoted to the management of design firms. As the director of research for PSMJ, his knowledge of current conditions and trends in the profession is very comprehensive. Bill has made several presentations at the local, state and national levels for various professional societies, and articles have appeared in a wide variety of publications serving the design profession.

 

Bill portrays his talent for writing and his knowledge of the design profession through his contributions to PSMJ's surveys. As part of his main responsibilities, he conducts the annual design industry surveys sponsored by PSMJ: the Management Salary Survey, the Bonus & Benefit Survey, Financial Performance Survey, and the Fees & Pricing in Design Firms.

 

Bill's degrees, both undergraduate and graduate, are in accounting. He is a founding member of Professional Services Management Association (PSMA), the only association devoted to the management of design firms. He has served on the national Board of Directors, as Secretary of the Association and is a member of the Association's College of Fellows.

Biography

 

As a PSMJ consultant, Tim Griffin has published numerous management articles and trained hundreds of design firm principals across North America in best business practices. He also authored the best selling book Winning With Millennials: Attracting, Retaining, and Empowering the Next Generation of Design Firm Professional.

Tim is a Partner and Branch Manager with RMF Engineering, Inc. an engineering consulting firm that works internationally. He is a registered professional engineer and certified energy manager with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Colorado State University.

Biography

As a consultant with PSMJ, Greg Hart advises clients primarily in the areas of mergers & acquisitions, ownership succession planning, and business valuation.  He has personally worked with dozens of architecture, engineering, and environmental consulting firms on these matters.  Additionally, Greg frequently contributes to a range of PSMJ and industry publications and speaks to various audiences on topics such as M&A strategy and succession planning.

Greg began his career as an Environmental Scientist with GEI Consultants, Inc., a nationwide environmental, geotechnical, and water resources engineering firm.  He also spent several years as an Environmental Scientist with a niche environmental insurance brokerage.  In that capacity, Greg focused on structuring non-traditional environmental insurance solutions to manage the business and liability risks associated with contaminated properties and to facilitate real estate, corporate merger/acquisition, and similar transactions.    

Greg holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and an MBA from Syracuse University.  He has also successfully completed business valuation coursework through the American Society of Appraisers.

Biography

Patricia M. Huntley has led project management programs for thousands of A/E principals and project managers, and their firms with PSMJ Resources. As a project delivery consultant at PSMJ she has completed project management assessments and financial benchmarking for numerous firms. In addition, she has developed curriculum and led educational programs on leadership, personal productivity, delegation, and feedback.

Patty has been engaged in project management in the A/E Design and Construction Industry over 20 years as part of a 27-year technical career. Throughout her career path, she has become recognized for her ability to execute multiple, fast-track, design and build remediation projects. As a construction management consultant, she was responsible for planning the construction of large public and private facilities.

Patty has a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University (CSU) and also completed her Masters of Science graduate course work and research at CSU. Additionally, she holds an MBA from the University of Denver, Daniels College of Business. She is also certified by the Project Management Institute as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Biography

With PSMJ, Christopher Martersteck does Project Management training throughout the world. Being one of the best PSMJ project deliver consultants, he has created customized tools and courses and helped thousands of project managers to better achieve their client and firm goals. He will also be teaching two of PSMJ's upcoming programs known as the Virtual PM Conference and the IPD Seminar.

With thirty-five years in the profession, Chris has served as Senior Vice President and corporate Project Management Director for several international architecture, engineering, and construction services firms, guiding A/E/C teams in project, program and construction management as well as Integrated Project Delivery/Design-Build projects. Chris has successfully managed technically complex and highly accelerated award-winning design-build projects, as well as a full range of conventional A/E/C projects.

Biography

Charles Nelson has worked as the head of PSMJ Australasia since 2001, representing PSMJ in the Asia-Pacific region since 2003. During this time, Charles has successfully presented more than 60 2-day Project Management workshops in Australia. He is also known for writing extensively in areas of project and practice management, being the author of TQM and ISO 9000 for Architects and Designers.

Charles has been involved with the A/E Design and Construction Industry for 50 years, including 9 years as the owner of a Boston-based design/build firm. His experience covers all aspects of architecture, with particular knowledge in planning, construction technology and contracts management /contract administration. As a permanent resident of Australia since 1984, a significant part of his work there has been in project specifications. 

Charles has a BA in Architecture and Psychology (Minnesota), and studied Land Use Law and Legislation and Law of Construction Contracts at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, a Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, and a member of the Project Management Institute and the American Society for Quality. He is trained in the UK Prince2 project management method, certified to the Prince2 Foundation level.

As a consultant with PSMJ,  T. Wayne Owens is responsible for teaching PSMJ's educational program Jail Time For Overhead Rate Errors. He has also written numerous articles on design firm financial management including the FAR's, project accounting and taxation.

Wayne has over 30 years of consulting, auditing and financial management experience. His experience includes a national accounting firm and four years with an architectural firm. For the past three years, he has limited his practice to A/E/C firms for whom he provides a full range of services.

Wayne received his B.S. from Clemson University. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Georgia Society of CPAs.

Biography

While being recognized as an authority in leading and growing a design firm, Wilson Pollock's work with PSMJ Resources, Inc. primarily involves utilizing his knowledge of direct experience in strategic planning and ownership transition to assist other design firm owners.

Wilson has been involved with the A/E Design and Construction Industry for more than 40 years, including 34 years as the founder and former president of a Boston-based commercial architecture and interior design firm - ADD, Inc.  A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), he was a 15-year member of the AIA Large Firm Roundtable, a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, a jurist for the Business Week/Architectural Record Awards 2000, and an Advisory Board member of the Boston Foundation for Architecture. He also served as Chairman of the Editorial Board of Architecture Boston magazine, was the former Board of Directors of the Boston Architectural College and IDRC New England for many years, and the Past President of the Boston Society of Architects.

Mr. Pollock received his Master of Science in Architecture from Columbia University and his Bachelor of Architecture from Pennsylvania State University, where he was elected to honorary arts and architectural societies, and received a 1991 Alumni Achievement Award.

Biography

Eric H. Snider is accountable for instructing PSMJ's A/E/C Marketing Bootcamps and Winning Proposals & Presentations educational programs. He also is an editor and article contributor for PSMJ Resources' A/E Marketing Journal newsletter.

Eric has been actively involved with the A/E industry for more than 30 years, and has been affiliated with firms ranging in size from 5 individuals to more than 3,000. His roles have included technical direction and direct line management as well as long-term assignments in local, regional, and national marketing direction roles. In addition, he has maintained extensive ties to the academic profession, concentrating on adult education for architects, engineers and scientists. The merging of these experiences equips him to apply hands-on, real-world experience in managing and marketing in the context of A/E firms.

Eric received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, as well as his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University.

Donald J. Thomas serves as a consultant for PSMJ, specializing in strategic planning and firm valuations. He is also one of PSMJ's prime instructors for the Ownership Transitions and Succession Planning CEO Roundtables.

Don has been engaged full-time in the engineering, design and construction industry since 1968, during which time he served as both consultant and client in public as well as private sectors of the market. He has held key officer positions with 3 of the top-ranked engineering firms in the U.S., providing management, operations support, strategic and tactical planning, marketing planning, business development, and training for each. In addition to his broad background in marketing, sales, and business development, Don has hands-on management experience in operations, field experience in construction, construction management, and design/build, and an academic background in architecture, engineering, and law.

Don attended the University of Tennessee, School of Architecture, and the Nashville Night Law School. His engineering degree is in Civil and Environmental from Vanderbilt University. He resides in Atlanta and is a member of CoreNet Global, ISPE, IFMA, NASFA, and S&ME.

Biography

Kenneth C. Tichacek has been a PSMJ consultant and seminar leader for more than 5 years. His areas of expertise as a PSMJ consultant include business development, marketing, and proposal strategy. He is also one of PSMJ's main instructors for both the A/E/C Marketing Bootcamp and Winning Proposals & Presentations program.

Ken has been actively engaged in the design and construction industry for over 35 years and is extremely well versed in all aspects of practice management. Ken is the founder and principal of Think Like Your Clients, LLC. He knows how to think like a client because he was one for over 10 years, in both the public and private sectors. That perspective has led Ken to develop a unique and effective approach to managing and leading client-oriented design and construction firms of all sizes. 

He is a member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and an Associate member of the AIA. Ken is a frequent guest lecturer for SMPS, AIA, ACEC and other professional organizations throughout the US and Canada .

Biography

Brad Wilson joined PSMJ as a consultant in 2002 as one of the senior M&A consultants. Since, Brad has facilitated both the purchase and sale of A/E/C firms of all types and sizes. Brad’s hands-on assistance with valuation and deal structuring has allowed many PSMJ clients to achieve their strategic growth goals or their ownership transition through a merger or acquisition. His broad-based knowledge of design firms’ cultures and operations has also been invaluable in integration planning and execution resulting in the achievement of financial goals for buyers and sellers. Additionally, Brad regularly facilitates PSMJ’s CEO Roundtables on Mergers & Acquisitions.

Brad’s real-world experience comes from over 10 years as one of four shareholders and Chief Financial Officer of a 70-person design-build architectural firm and five years as the corporate controller of a 250-person multi-office A/E firm that was acquired in the early 1990’s. Brad also worked in public accounting with a large regional accounting firm providing management consulting and software implementation services to the A/E industry.   

Brad has a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Ohio State University and a combined MBA/Law degree from Capital University. He is a Certified Management Accountant and maintains his certification by completing over 80 hours of continuing education in finance, management and economics courses each year.
